Warner Robins is a city in Georgia, U.S. State, located in the central part of the state in Houston and Peach counties. It is currently one of the 10th largest incorporated Cities in Georgia with a population estimated at 75,797 in 2018. In 1940, it was called the community of Wellston. Census reveals that the community of Wellston was sparsely populated and mainly occupied by the farmers and their families. Its most notable landmark was a train stop. Peach orchards covered areas of the surrounding countryside. This all changed in World War II. The Department of War plans to construct an air depot in the Southeast. With the support of U.S. Representative Carl Vinson, Wellston community leader Charles Bostic Watson, collaborated with Macon officials to locate this air depot in Houston County. The offer was approved by the US government in June 1941 which includes 3,108 acres of land. At the time of its establishment in 1942, this air force base was initially called the Wellston Army Air Depot in which Colonel Charles E. Thomas was the first commander. He wanted to name this depot in honor of his mentor Augustine Warner Robins but the regulation requires the base to be named after the nearest town. Colonel Thomas convinced Boss Watson and other community leaders to rename the town of Wellston. Thus, the town was given the new name of Warner Robins on September 1, 1942. Shortly after that, the base was renamed Warner Robins Army Air Depot on October 14, 1942. Robins Air Force Base is not located within the city limits but is across US Highway 129, acting as a boundary between the base and the city.
