Jonesboro is a city in Clayton County, Georgia, United States. Jonesborough was the original name of the city. The population was 4,724 according to the 2010 census. Jonesboro was founded in 1823 as Leaksville. The Macon and Western Railway entered the area in 1846 and the town was renamed in memory of railway official Samuel G. Jones. It was incorporated in 1859. The last skirmish in the Atlanta Campaign had been fought here south of Atlanta during the Civil War, cutting off the city and forcing the mayor of Atlanta to surrender at Marietta in early September 1864. Atlanta’s final loss in the Jonesborough Battle ended up being a turning point in the history of the country, propelling Abraham Lincoln to re-election two months later and continuing the battle until the Confederacy finally surrendered the following year. In the Summer Olympics 1996, Jonesboro was the host for beach volleyball on the artificial beach in the Clayton County International Park.
