Conyers is a neighborhood of Atlanta and the only town in Rockdale County, Georgia. The city is a part of Atlanta Metropolitan Area, 24 miles east of downtown Atlanta. The area known as the Rockdale was open for settlement from 1816 to 1821 due to the refusal of John Holcomb, a blacksmith and was the first settler in what is now Conyers. He resided in the center of Conyers, on Main Street, where the new Rockdale County Courthouse is located. The demand for a railroad to cross Georgia came to light and John refused to sell his land and even threatened to shoot anyone from the railroad who came onto his property but eventually Dr. W.D. Conyers, a banker from Covington persuaded John Holcomb into selling his land; Dr. Conyers then sold the land to the Georgia Railroad. By 1845, the railroad was in full operation. Roughly 400 people lived around the watering station and Conyers had been incorporated in 1845. Conyers became the county seat in 1870, when it’s surrounding areas were absorbed into Rockdale County out of Newton County, Georgia.
