The “zero mileposts” was driven into the ground in what is now Five Points, after engineers identified various possible sites for the terminus. A year later, the region around the Milepost became a settlement called Terminus, and later Thrasherville. In 1842, it was called Marthasville in honor of Governor Wilson Lumpkin’s daughter Martha and had 6 buildings and 30 people. The city was later renamed Atlanta by J. Edgar Thomson, chief engineer of the Georgia Railway. On December 29, 1847, the citizens agreed and the town became Atlanta.
