The Windows 10 End-of-Life occur on October 14, 2025, after which it will no longer receive free security updates or technical assistance from Microsoft. This means that any PC running Windows 10 will still function, but it will become increasingly vulnerable to security threats without updates. Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11 to ensure continued security and support.
For Covered Entities and Business Associates, HIPAA requires that all software in use, be supported by the manufacturer. When Windows 10 reaches end of life, it will become a violation under HIPAA regulations for each device that hasn’t been upgraded.
Windows 11 is available, for many PCs to upgrade to, and is still fully supported. However, some PC hardware won’t be capable of migrating to Windows 11. For more information on these requirements, please visit Microsoft’s requirements page here.
The biggest issue will be for older PCs that do not have a TPM – Trusted Platform Module – chip in their PC. This wasn’t common for desktops, and many PCs older than 5 years won’t have the chip. Because of this, these PCs won’t be able to upgrade to Windows 11.
If your PC meets the requirements, then there is no charge for Windows 11. Microsoft is still offering this free of charge.
