Dr. Technology – Patients Show Interest in EMR

Many of our customers are continually upgrading their technology to better serve their patients and their business.

Those that have purchased Medisoft Clinical EMR or other systems now can use e-prescibing, be connected to their patients with an encrypted portal and be able to update a medical history anywhere they have access to a computer.

Despite the cost and initial sacrifices associated with EMR and other technologies, doctors are consistently updating knowledge-based systems to aid in patient management and diagnostics.

Making their practice better and more efficient is the main goal for many physician practices.  It’s an exciting time in healthcare with all the new initiatives.  If you compare it to the banking business where they have automated with ATMs and online account management, you might notice some similarities.

Patient portals allow both patients and doctors to communicate over a secure website to share test results, schedule and cancel appointments, make online payments, and review or add prescriptions.  Portals can provide a compliant (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and secure way to communicate with a patient.  If a patient reviews their medication list and health history before they go into the office, it will be more accurate, safer and more efficient for the medical staff.

Other advancements include patient kiosks where patients can update health and insurance information as well as consent documentation which goes directly into the EMR automatically.  Education materials provided online or at an office workstation can allow patients to view relevant information on their condition.

34% of all U.S.physicians and 40% of all primary care providers had EMR technology in 2011.  This year  those numbers are increasing quickly according to the latest data released by CMS.

For staff, technologies that manage a practice’s administrative functions can mean drastic changes in responsibility and procedures.  Patient input, acceptance and knowledge of these new technologies is essential to designing any changes in office processes.  Simply asking patients for their opinion on these  systems and advertising your investment within the office is a great way to introduce new upgrades to the general public.

At checkout, patients can be told how to access their lab results, contact the physician through secure email, and use the other communication tools available.

Customer demand also will be a factor as the EMR market matures.  Patients like to see practices with the latest technologies and will let their family and friends know what they encountered at the doctors office.
